Three 3 copies of The Lord of the Rings, by J. One 1 copy of “The Lord of the Rings”. It should be noted that these books make up the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. A polished, gold-colored ring made of compressed paper. When worn, it was found that the ring fit all sizes and grew or shrank to accommodate the wearer. No other anomalous properties were exhibited.
France set to lower speed limit ‘to save lives’ but move lacks public support
Introduction[ edit ] The speed of gravitational waves in the general theory of relativity is equal to the speed of light in a vacuum, c. Formally, c is a conversion factor for changing the unit of time to the unit of space. Thus, the speed of “light” is also the speed of gravitational waves and any massless particle. Such particles include the gluon carrier of the strong force , the photons that make up light hence carrier of electromagnetic force , and the hypothetical gravitons which make up the associated field particles of gravity however a theory of the graviton requires a theory of quantum gravity.
Static fields[ edit ] The speed of physical changes in a gravitational or electromagnetic field should not be confused with “changes” in the behavior of static fields that are due to pure observer-effects. These changes in direction of a static field, because of relativistic considerations, are the same for an observer when a distant charge is moving, as when an observer instead decides to move with respect to a distant charge.
GENDER DIFFERENCES IN MATE SELECTION: EVIDENCE FROM A SPEED DATING EXPERIMENT Raymond Fisman Sheena S. Iyengar Emir Kamenica Itamar Simonson October 25,
By Nathaniel Scharping September 14, 4: On a farm in Novosibirsk, Russian geneticist Dmitry K. Belyaev selectively bred hundreds of foxes over multiple generations, eventually creating something never seen before: His goal was to recreate the process by which humans gradually turned wild dogs into workers and friends, hopefully learning something about the mechanism of domestication in the process. Nice Foxes Only To accomplish his goal, he selected the most docile foxes he could find from fur farms around Russia.
He then bred them in successive generations, each time choosing only the tamest individuals. Belyaev found that the process worked for fox domestication as well. They looked more like dogs than wild foxes — they would wag their tails and perk up in the presence of humans, and displayed none of the skittishness or aggressiveness usually associated with wild animals. And, all of this happened without any training on the part of the researchers.
Their only intervention was to selectively breed those foxes that fit in with humans the best. Even their breeding patterns changed, they now mated out of season and had on average one more offspring per litter. For example, their adrenal glands are not as active, but they have higher levels of serotonin. Dogs likely went through much the same process over the course of hundreds of generations as they gradually adapted to living with us.
Resumes suck. Here’s the data.
A few weeks ago as my family and I were driving through the wondrous mountains of Colorado avoiding bears for real…I saw a big brown one! I was lucky enough to be sliding through twitter and came across Mr. Participants were asked questions in quick succession which made the chat super fast paced.
Popularity of scratch-off lottery tickets remains high despite their low odds of winning. Most people playing the game will eventually lose money, only a few will gain. Step 3 Got my trusty tools ready: One is an American quarter and the other is a Canadian Quarter. Step 4 Start scratching! Scratching lottery tickets is NOT as exciting as I thought. It felt more like a boring job. The chances of getting this are 1 in 1, Step 5 Tabulate each amount won.
Losers were placed on the table, and the proud winners were put higher up on the stool Just for a more dramatic metaphorical effect Step 6 Report the totals. The proud winners in all their glory, especially our champion: I then proceeded to the Bank of America ATM and deposited the cash directly back into my investment account. Anyone who invests their money in the lottery for purposes other than mild thrills and entertainment is according to the odds just dreaming. I just happened to buy the right tickets at the right time for this particular experiment, but if I repeated the experiment again, I would most likely not make a profit or break even.
Nov 10, EDIT: KeepSafe in San Francisco and Improbable in London are now both hiring engineers without relying on resumes! About a year ago, after looking at the resumes of engineers we had interviewed at TrialPay in , I learned that the strongest signal for whether someone would get an offer was the number of typos and grammatical errors on their resume. These results were pretty unexpected, ran counter to how resumes were normally filtered, and left me scratching my head about how good people are at making value judgments based on resumes, period.
So, I decided to run an experiment. In this experiment, I wanted to see how good engineers and recruiters were at resume-based candidate filtering.
Amino Acid Dating Introduction. Amino acid dating has an important attribute in common with Carbon 14 dating. While most other dating mechanisms date the rock surrounding fossils, both Amino Acid and Carbon 14 dating methods, date the actual fossil itself.
Object is fully animate and extremely hostile toward all life forms. It escaped containment, attempting to kill all staff present. It was unable to inflict any damage due to its small size and the materials used in its composition. You are suspended from testing SCP until further notice. Though I have to admit, it smelled delicious. Relax, this time I’m paying for it.
Speed Dating experiment, your thoughts I did that a few times ages ago when it first started gaining popularity. Might be interesting to try it now just for the hell of it. Just know that each woman is going to start off asking you almost the same exact questions. The first is almost always going to be “what do you do?
Where do you live?

Why the era of capital punishment is ending By David Von Drehle The case of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev absorbed Americans as no death-penalty drama has in years. The saga of his crime and punishment began with the shocking bloodbath at the Boston Marathon, continued through the televised manhunt that paralyzed a major city and culminated in the death sentence handed down by a federal jury on May 15 after a two-phase trial.
Support for capital punishment has sagged in recent years, but it remains strong in a situation like this, where the offense is so outrageous, the process so open, the defense so robust and guilt beyond dispute. Even so, Tsarnaev is in no danger of imminent death. He is one of more than 60 federal prisoners under sentence of execution in a country where only three federal death sentences have been carried out in the past half-century. A dozen years have passed since the last one.
Despite extraordinary efforts by the courts and enormous expense to taxpayers, the modern death penalty remains slow, costly and uncertain. For the overwhelming majority of condemned prisoners, the final step—that last short march with the strap-down team—will never be taken. The relative few who are killed continue to be selected by a mostly random cull.

Like body language, many aspects of effective dating and ‘chat-up’ communications apply to successful communications in general. We tend to be concerned about ourselves, but the other person’s needs, feelings and reactions are central to being successful. Some of these principles, and other specific findings relating to forming early successful relationships in dating, are illustrated in the summary below of the study carried out in April by Professor Richard Wiseman of the University of Hertfordshire, as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival.
These lessons are in essence transferable to all relationships and one-to-one meetings, aside from providing many useful dating pointers. I say ‘in essence’ because I do not suggest that at your next business meeting you should ask the other person “What is your favourite pizza topping? The study, conducted on Sunday 9th April by Professor Richard Wiseman University of Hertfordshire at the Edinburgh International Science Festival, involved members of the public taking part in five-hundred ‘speed dates’.
During the event, participants rated the attractiveness of their dates and indicated whether they would like to meet that person again. Initial results revealed that in about a third of the dates, participants reached decisions about their potential mates in less than thirty seconds. To uncover the best type of chat-up lines, researchers compared the conversations of participants rated as ‘very desirable’ by their dates with those seen as ‘especially undesirable’.
Controversy[ edit ] Anthropologist Helen Fisher in What happens in the dating world can reflect larger currents within popular culture. For example, when the book The Rules appeared, it touched off media controversy about how men and women should relate to each other, with different positions taken by New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd and British writer Kira Cochrane of The Guardian. Sara McCorquodale suggests that women meeting strangers on dates meet initially in busy public places, share details of upcoming dates with friends or family so they know where they’ll be and who they’ll be with, avoid revealing one’s surname or address, and conducting searches on them on the Internet prior to the date.
Don’t leave drinks unattended; have an exit plan if things go badly; and ask a friend to call you on your cell phone an hour into the date to ask how it’s going.
Le speed dating (littéralement «rencontres rapides»), ou le «rencontre minute», est une méthode de recherche d’un partenaire en vue d’une liaison sentimentale ou matrimoniale qui consiste en une série d’entretiens courts avec différents partenaires potentiels.
Types of mate preference functions. Variation in the slope of a preference function—in general reference. Acceptance thresholds A step preference function in which potential mates with trait values greater than the threshold are accepted and all others are rejected. Responsiveness an aspect of choosiness.
Average response to potential mate. Discrimination an aspect of choosiness. Variation in responsiveness can be depicted as a vertical shift in the position of the preference function Figure 1o—r and see also Bailey This can be calculated, for example, as the standard deviation of all responses Brooks and Endler or the difference between a response to the most preferred stimulus and the average response to all stimuli Gray and Cade , though either method can yield similar results Bailey Stabilizing preference function Preference function components.
Mate preference functions are shown for two populations or individuals black dotted and blue solid lines. Female preference functions can be described by three aspects. Which male trait values are preferred, indicated by the trait value that elicits maximal response. How much deviation from the peak in male trait is tolerated, indicated by the width of the function.
